The Drakensberg, or Dragon Mountains, is the highest mountain range in South Africa, rising to 3,482 m (11,424 ft) at their highest point. The range is also sometimes called The Escarpment.
Having flown back to Johannesburg from Victoria Falls, I still had a couple of weeks of vacation so I rented a car, (disconnected the speedometer drive once again) and set off east to tour what was then the Eastern transvaal and is now Mpumalanga Province.
This image is taken from the Lowveld, or lowlands to the east of the escarpment. Further east from my location in this photo is the Kruger National Park. Despite spending two-and-a-half years in South Africa, I never visited the Kruger – just never got around to it. Although I was close on this trip, having just returned from the Okavango Delta and the Moremi and Chobe reserves in Botswana, I was safaried-out.
This photo was taken later in the afternoon but the sun is still at least three hours from setting. Storm clouds are pushing up from the south.
