Although I'm fortunate to see lots of spectacular sunsets here in texas, where I live is not conducive to photographing them. This part of of texas is as flat as a pancake and the sprawl of suburban homes add nothing of foreground interest. The rate of construction here and to the west continues apace, slowed somewhat by the recession but picking up again now. So sunset land for me is pushing ever further to the west and out of reach.
I captured this image from my hotel room at the JW Marriott in Grand Rapids, MI. If you're going to stay there, I recommend a room overlooking the river rather than the city. Then you too may get treated to one of natures wonders.
What I liked particularly about this scene was the strip of cloud obscuring the sun. Below the cloud, the sun is casting radiant colors while above the sun is illuminating the higher clouds seemingly from below making the bottoms white and the tops grey.
Of course, like my home, had I not been on the 19th floor of the hotel, I wouldn't have had this unobstructed view and I wouldn't have been able to capture this image.
