It looks in today's shot as though these trucks are heading into the unknown. Why would we move camp in a sand storm?
Partly because this wasn't that bad a sand storm. Sure visibility is restricted but it's not like driving in dense fog at night – at least the reflection of your own headlights is not blinding you. Plus, you don't have to worry about driving off the edge of the road!
The white truck on the left towing the squared-off trailer were our latest additions. The trailer was the new labor kitchen trailer and the truck a new MAN 6×6 cargo truck. It had 32 forward gears and 8 reverse gears compared with our older MANs that had 8 forward and 2 reverse.
Of course, our mechanics could rebuild the gearbox of an older MAN truck in their workshop. This new one was way too complex for that. The era of replacing systems rather than fixing components had arrived with this truck.
