Daily Photo – Over Here!

Standing near the top of a ridge of dunes, I'm looking down as an observer gesticulates, ‘Over Here!' to the drivers of the third and fourth .

Despite the power of these machines and their super-sized tires, they were key to paying our way and we generally didn't take risks with them. The face of the dune behind the location, off to the right of the photo, is simply too steep to work on so we worked around it.

I've processed this one to better show the contours of the dunes. The golden hours were too hectic with work activities to be taking photos which meant many of my photos were taken during the day.

You can tell from the shadows that it's pretty near midday. For large parts of the day, with the high in the sky, there would be very little contrast in the dunes and it could be very difficult to ‘see' the shape of the terrain.

Also, with the dunes lying at all angles, even knowing horizontal was a challenge and you could often feel yourself going uphill, downhill or traversing a hill sideways before you would see the terrain had changed.

The processing on this image shows the smoothed contours of the dunes, an interconnected series of . Driving around could easily double the straight-line distance but at a significantly reduced risk. An medevac was at least three hours distant and the cross-dune drive to Sarir was just as long if not longer.
