Daily Photo – Everglades 2

Same spot as yesterday but a composition with a different treatment. This is a view to the west so the Everglades is flowing from right to left across the frame. Since the Everglades is a river, albeit a really slow moving one, it has a very different character to the swamps of southern Louisiana where in many places the water just pools and stagnates. The that had soaked us earlier was moving away to the south-west. The grey clouds on the trailing edge of that particular storm still hang in the sky.

I chartered my from ‘Everglades Airboat Charters‘. My Captain/Pilot/Guide has been flying here since he was a young boy but his navigation technique was the same as I was used to in the deserts of North Africa. Get to know some local landmarks and use those to inform you as to your location. Also, to protect the area they tend to stick to the same network of paths.

i always used to have robust discussions while in Libya about not knowing where you were was not the same thing as being lost. I think the same discussion could be held here – you might not know where you are but you needn't be lost because of the available landmarks.
