Daily Photo – Block 335B

Block 335B towers over Chinatown, Singapore. Located on Smith , between South Road and New Road, I took this photo of the western face of the building from around the intersection of and New Road.

Clearly the laundry-pole-out-the-window is a local cultural thing. If you take a Google View drive by you'll see that even though the building has had a coat of paint or two in the intervening years, the habit of placing the laundry on a pole out the still holds strong. I wonder what happens if you lose a garment? On a street like Street you could probably find it in the street but if it comes off one of those poles from Block 335B, it could almost end up anywhere!

Unlike Pagoda street, though, there's a dearth of Singapore national flags flying from these windows.

If you're wondering, block 335A sits out of frame to the right.

Block 335B, Smith Street, Chinatown, Singapore. August 11, 1989.
