Not really life on Mars but if you wanted to fake a Mars landing you could do worse than this part of western Libya.

Taken in 1990 it's almost a reverse view of this shot – in that it's the same escarpment, but looking down.

Indeed, about a third of the way up the frame on the left, to the left of the dark outcrop, there's a small white dot which is, in fact, a Rover.

The myriad of dried water courses running away from the lower slopes of the escarpment made driving parallel to the base particularly arduous and uncomfortable.

Running across the middle of the image is a larger water course that, comparing to the size of the Rover, has some pretty large trees in it.

And in the distant haze, where the meets the , lies a band of .
