These 4-gallon tin plate fuel containers were the British equivalent of the German ‘Jerrycan' at the beginning of WWII. Mainly manufactured in Egypt, they were cheap and plentiful but not robust, hence the name ‘flimsies'. These must be relatively early ones since they are packed in pairs in wooden cases. Later, thin plywood and cardboard were substituted. Although unopened, the fuel inside had long since evaporated or leaked out from punctures or seam defects. Given the location where I found these, they most likely came from a Long Range Desert Group patrol in 1941 since they lie between Kufra and Siwa.
