Kicking Horse Natural Bridge
We were on our way back from Emerald lake when we stopped at the natural bridge on the Kicking Horse River.
The turnoff to Emerald Lake is about a mile southwest of the Yoho national Park Visitor Center on the Trans-Canada Highway. After that, it's about another mile and a half to the natural bridge.
Formed by erosion of a softer underlying rock formation, the bridge appears more of a tear in the rock than an elegant structure. Standing to the side, the roar deafens even when the river is low.
On returning from the riverbank to the parking lot I glanced down at the ground and saw this rock formation. The river being low let me capture the image above. It's a closeup of a dried section of rock on the northern bank of the river.
Earlier in the year, the meltwater rushes off the surrounding mountains submerging this stretch of rock. In photography, timing is everything.
It's that force of water, laden with grit eroded higher up the valley, that has scoured the wondrous swirls and loops in this image.
The colors – purples and oranges, enhanced in this image – suggest traces of manganese and iron.
