In today's photo, a migrating bird (I'm not an ornithologist) stands on our landing strip, wings outstretched as if cleared for takeoff.
You can see from the wind sock in the background that the bird is facing into the wind. The shadow almost beneath the bird indicates this was near midday and the background and the windsock show it was also a windy day.
I don't think this bird made it very far. Later in my collection I've a photo of a dead bird that looks quite similar to this one.
Whenever migrating birds touched down in the desert they appeared doomed. Food was scarce, water was scarcer. Some of them would come close enough to eat scraps and drink from water we put out for them but they never seemed to gain the strength to climb up into the currents to aid them on their way.
