Heuningspruit is a really small town, if it even qualifies as a town, about 18 miles north-east of Kroonstad in the Free State, south africa. I took this photo of the sunrise from our camp there.
I remember at the time we were camped there, a new stretch of Highway 1 was under construction. Highway 1 runs from Pretoria to Cape Town. The old highway ran from town to town but back in the late eighties they build a more direct stretch from Johannesburg to Kroonstad. The old route ran through the towns of Parys and Vredefort.
I don't recall whose idea it was, but one day, one of the crew decided to explore and drive up this new road. They found it was complete from Heuningspruit to where it intersected the old route between Parys and Sasolburg. After that discovery, it became our own private highway for a couple of months.
Whenever we went to or from Johnanessburg, we'd put on our flashing lights and head up the new road or, if returning, use our 4×4's to leave the regular highway and drive down the embankment to join our new road and we were away. With our lights flashing it just looked as though we were part of the construction effort. We were never challenged for using the route. Over 40 miles of pristine, traffic free, highway just for us!
