Taken on a break from surveying in south africa, Stockclose Farm lies on an un-named road from Aldbourne to Marlborough by way of Axford and Mildenhall. Early morning February 1989, a haze obscures the distant features. I took this with a telephoto lens – possibly a 300mm. You don't have to use a wide angle lens for successful landscapes.
When I was younger I would fling my BMW 5-series (and younger still my Honda motorbike) down this hill and around the bend in the photo at over 60 mph, trusting to luck that there wouldn't be a tractor around the blind corner. There's a great section of winding road over the two miles beyond the cottages; barely wide enough for two cars but great fun in a powerful car with a manual transmission.
I was there again this June but driving much more conservatively in my rented SUV – older and wiser perhaps. Older, certainly!
