If you look closely at the right half of the rocky outcrop of top of this hill you'll notice two black spots. These are caves, hence my title, The lookout.
I'll post some images over the next few days of these caves but I wanted to give some context first.
Up on the hill, this location gave ample warning of anyone approaching from this side of the hill (but not of someone approaching from the other sides). While there was no obvious water here, the bushes show there's enough moisture around to support at least some form of life. Thinking back, I don't recall if I walked all the way around. If I did, I didn't take any photos.
Perhaps ‘life' is too rich a term. Perhaps ‘existence' would be more appropriate. As you'll see in the next few days, these were multi-room dwellings carved out of the rock, not simple, natural, caves.
Of course, I had no way of dating these dwellings or knowing for how long they were occupied or when they were vacated. For me that's likely to remain an unsolved mystery.
You'll notice the vehicle tracks in the gravel leading up the hill have been filled in where the dune crosses them. Vehicle tracks in the gravel surface often remain visible for decades while the constant shifting of the sand in the dunes can erase vehicle tracks in mere hours.
