Yesterday I flew into Boston with my wife, Karen. Karen is attending a conference and I decided to rent a car to drive to Lubec, Maine, then drive back down the cost to Boston. Last week the weather was supposed to be sunny and cold. Now I'm here it's supposed to be wet and mild.
I sped up I-95, bypassing some wonderful color in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and lower Maine, but as I drove further north the colors paled and the number of trees that had already dropped their leaves increased.
I used my iPad as a GPS to track my course and make sure I didn't miss any turns. At Bangor the freeway gave way to the highway and my pace slowed. I had hoped to get to the Quoddy Head lighthouse before sunset but realized that was not going to happen. As I drove south on 193 near Deblois I did take the shot that accompanies this post.
I drove into Lubec, the eastern most town in the USA, as the sun finally set and day gave way to night. A friendly local directed me to The Peacock House, a charming Bed and Breakfast run by Dennis and Sue. The property was built in the 1860's. Tonight I'm the only guest. The season for many ends just after Columbus Day but Dennis and Sue will keep The Peacock House open until October 31st, then close for the next six months.
They directed me to the waterfront for dinner where I had a basket of fried shrimp and haddock with french fries ( fish and chips where I come from) at Franky's. I wasn't the only diner – there were six other travelers eating there and one family of locals. The food and service were excellent and I had the opportunity to watch a georgeous golden full moon rise over Campobello Island, canada, less than 100 yards to the east across the sound.
