Whenever I look at this photo I think of the (near) timelessness in this view of a Li River Settlement. Near, because of the telephone poles. I toyed with the idea of removing them but decided not to. maybe I will later.
I thought I'd post a black and white rendering first with a color rendering below. You can decide for yourself which you prefer, but for me it's the black and white version.
The walls look as though they're for flood defenses since there appears to be a roadway behind them and the top of the wall appears to coincide with the ground floor of the buildings beyond. I find it interesting that the walls appear to be in layers, potentially providing more resistance for the foundation of the taller wall.
Maybe Network Rail could consider such an approach as they set about restoring the washed out track at Dawlish (BBC) (but they probably won't). I'm somewhat familiar with that area of the U.K. as we used to run out to a pub in Dawlish Warren when I was studying at Exeter University in the 80's.
