Now jumping back to the calanscio sand sea in eastern libya in 1991 for a photo of a hard landing.
Perhaps inspired by tales of Land Rover flying from the western side of the country but more likely just not paying attention, one of our survey Land Rovers also went airborne over the slip face of a dune and landed hard.

Even more amazing, the passenger by the open door here elected to get out of the vehicle in mid-flight! I don't know what would have happened had he stayed in but the driver and other passenger were shaken, not stirred, while the passenger who bailed caught his back on the door catch as he exited and got a bruise on his back.
The driver and middle-seat passenger were back at work the next day. Mr. Bruise was taken off for an x-ray and got a week's rest but no lasting damage.
Unlike their colleagues on the west side, by flipping back onto their wheels, their radio antenna's remained intact, if bent, and they were able to call for help directly and tell us where they were!
