Today's photo, ‘Calanscio Vibroseis' shows our seismic line stretching out from one set of dunes and across a plain towards another distant dune line.
The vibrators on this crew were Failing Y2700's on Birdwagen Mark IV chassis. The four on the left of the line are working and the one on the right of the line is a spare.
The black line that runs from the lower left corner and off into the distance is the line of geophone stations. These detect the signals coming back from the layers of the earth and, like a microphone, turn that sound energy into electrical signals that were relayed back to our recording truck where they'd be recorded on tape.
The tapes would be sent off to a processing center to be turned into seismic sections of the earth giving clues as to the possibility of hydrocarbons trapped in the rocks below us.
At the head of the line is the ‘front crew' who laid the geophones. The black dot to the left of the head of the line is one of the Bedford trucks used to transport the crew to and from work and to ferry geophones and cables from the back of the line to the front.
