So my recent posts about the apple and bee game were a side show to the main event which was a cock fight – actually a series of them, not just one. I guess this was a regular event as the venue had bleachers on all four sides and a roof to keep off he worst of the rain.
Most of the crowd seemed pretty engrossed in what was going on but I can't say that I ‘got it'. It just struck me as sad.
I never did figure out, neither did I ask, what made the two birds fight each other. Mostly they'd peck at each other with their beaks but they had these metal spike-like knife-blade things strapped to their legs.
As they'd flap and squawk and leap around these knives would cut the other bird. The fight would go on till one bird couldn't fight any more, not that the victor was in great shape either.
In the pre-internet days in a dusty town with few TVs and nothing on them worth watching, this passed for a social event for the local men – I don't see many women in any of the photos I took here.
Of course, what was really of interest to the crowd was whether they'd bet on the right bird. For most of the spectators, it was just another game of chance.
And I'd be willing to wager that the losing birds, and sometimes the winning ones also, ended up in the pot at the end of the day.
