As you can see, it's not the cleanest environment. I mean, would you choose to take your car to a place looking like this to get it serviced?
Yes, that's a land rover gearbox on the table in the lower right corner. The water truck – looks like a 1,500 imperial gallon capacity – is in for a service.
There were no diagnostic codes here, no computers to tell the mechanic what to replace. Just experience and paper or microfiche manuals.
The surveyors would make up a grid and print out huge equipment and date charts that the mechanics would pin on the walls inside their trailer to plan the maintenance rotations for the different vehicles. Getting spares often took six months so planning ahead was a critical skill.
