Today's photo, ‘Dune Shaking' was taken close to the location of yesterday's. It shows a side view of the four vibrators with the dunes in the background.
This place literally does consist of sand as far as the eye can see. If you were to crest the ridge of dunes in the background your view would be pretty much the same.
In most cases, however, the surface is plenty firm enough to drive on, or to walk on, without sinking in too far. It was usually the surveyors that got stuck as they were the first into an area.
For everyone else, you could usually see where the surveyors had had to dig themselves out and you could avoid it. Sometimes the approach was just like approaching high water – you'd get out and walk to find the firmest sand.
