So my wife, who's from New Orleans, reminded me today that the Mardi gras parade season started this past Saturday. So as we lead up to Mardi gras on February 21, I'm going to post some of my favorite photos from Mardi gras past (Mardi Grasses past?).
I thought I lead off with this image of one of the flambeau carriers from the 2010 Endymion parade. This was taken as the parade was about to set off. This guy was one of a group of about eight, all similarly dressed for their march to the Superdome. The torch is fueled from a propane tank secured to the frame on his back.
Of course, 2010 was the year the New Orleans Saints won the Superbowl (congratulations to Eli Manning and the New York Giants for their win this year) so the atmosphere in New Orleans was something special – like a rebirth after Katrina. The phrase of the day was “Who Dat?”, as in “Who dat sayin' dey gonna beat dem Saints?” and this guy had used his finger to etch the phrase into the soot on his torch.
