So I.M. Pei's pyramid houses one entrance to the louvre. You only have to join the line here once in your life to think that there has to be a better way in and there are. There are four other entrances to the louvre – direct from Metro station Palais royal-Musée du louvre, from the Arc du Caroussel, from 99 Rue du Rivoli and from the Porte des Lions just east of the Pont royal. You can even get your tickets in advance. If you do, note that you can bypass the queue of most people in the courtyard – head to the left side of the entrance instead of the right side.
If you do enter through the Pyramid, you descend into the underground lobby and from there you can head off in one of three directions to get into the museum proper. Each of these entrances happens to be below a smaller pyramid that also rise into the Cour Napoléon.
During the day, these pyramids bring natural light from the outside into the underground lobby. At night the light flow is reversed and these pyramids emit light that illuminates the courtyard and surrounding buildings.
For the photo below I had set up and taken one round of photos and was about to take another set when a family came and sat on the wall between myself and the pyramid. The had a brief snack and some drinks before heading off again. I was really frustrated as they could easily have just sat behind me but I just bit my lip and waited them out, not wanting to cause a scene or draw attention to the fact that I had moved some signs to clean up my view a little.
