Daily Photo – Fine: $150

Fine: $150. OK so that was Singapore Dollars in 1989 but that was still about $75 US! This sign was in the restroom of a bar in Chinatown, Singapore. Talking with the locals, it was aimed at the older generation of locals who had grown up without flush toilets. But the sign was in English! I kept wondering who was tasked with enforcement while feeling glad it wasn't me! Certainly no-one darted into the restroom after I left to check on me. A hollow warning, then? Probably not because flushing of toilets was mandatory by law at the time (and may still be for all I know). It was only two or so years after this that Singapore enacted it's ban on chewing gum.

The more valuable information of and haemmorrhagic fever was presented in both English and , but clearly from a public health viewpoint, unflushed toilets were the greater hazard.

Public service information in a Singapore restroom, August 1989. Just glad I didn't have the job of Toilet Inspector!
