Today's photo, ‘Hold on Tight' was taken in Tienanmen Square in 1991. I'm not sure what the boy was watching – perhaps all us strange foreigners, perhaps another police squad marching from A to B.
Assuming he was about 2-years old at the time, he'd now be 24. Like many of the people in my photos, I can't look at them without wondering what became of these people.
I wonder how his life is turning out. It's undoubtedly different from that of his grandfather (father?) steadying the bike beside him. Is his grandfather (father?) still with us or has he already shuffled off to the spirit world?
Note the ‘home made' seat he's sitting on and the simplicity of the brakes on the bike. My daughter and I rode our bikes to her school this morning. Both bikes were made in China. Neither have mudguards. And neither have a clamp for a light, unlike this specimen. Progress, apparently.
