So I'm not a naturalist (nor a naturist) so no fancy Latin names here (and no nudity either).
On one leave from south africa I took a tour that flew me into the Okavango Delta and from there by forward control land Rover across Botswana and Zimbabwe to Vitoria Falls before flying back to Jo'burg.
As our (relatively) small plane came in to land, the pilot suggested we could look out the port windows after landing and see the wreckage of a sister plane whose landing gear had collapsed on landing a week earlier. This had sent the plane hurtling into the trees rather than the more normal taxi to the apron. Pilot joke, I guess. But there it was as we rolled by, hoping our landing gear wouldn't also collapse on the rough dirt strip.
I was traveling alone and joined some Italians and Germans for the two-week trip.
Moremi Game Reserve is a fantastic place and the only officially protected area within the Okavango Delta. If you want to see Africa in the wild I wholly recommend this reserve.
I took this picture of an Impala as we were driving towards a watering hole to watch the animals arrive at dusk. Like a lot of animals, they stop to check you out before deciding whether to run away or ignore you. Shortly after this photo, it decided to run away.
If you look at the out-of-focus highlights in the background you'll notice they are donut shaped, from the tamron 500mm f/8 mirror lens I was using. The fixed aperture of the lens gave it some limitations but it was a lot less expensive and a lot easier to pack than a regular 500mm lens.
