Juxtaposition means to place side by side. It's one of those fundamental photographic composition rules, along with rule of thirds, leading lines, etc. Not that I thought the people than planned the juxtaposition below were thinking of photographs at the time.
On the right we have St. Paul's Church located at 56 Macalister Road, Georgetown, penang. This church traces its history back to 1886. It's an chinese language Anglican denomination church. This building was erected in 1930. Across the street, ie. behind my viewpoint, is a Roman catholic Church.
I found a page on St. Paul's church on a penang travel tips website and lifted the information above from it. If you visit the site though, you'll see they have chosen to place the church in the left of the frame and show the church annex on the right. You'll note that in my photo, the annex isn't there, so clearly the annex is post 1989.
I, however, thought the composition to be more interesting by placing the church on the right of the frame and showing the building to the left.
I wonder if customers of the church get a discount from the services of their neighbor to the left? Maybe not, not today, anyway. When I look at Google Maps satellite view the building on the left now appears to be a vacant lot guess the Modern Casket Company went under. Unfortunately there's no street view data.
