Today's photo is of a dwelling in the lookout hill I posted yesterday.
I'm not expert in these things but I think what we're looking at was once an interior chamber, hacked out of the soft limestone rock. The rounded shape just isn't natural.
What I think has happened is that this chamber has been opened to the world as the rock has eroded. Of course, it's possible that the makers cut a porch where they could sit in the shade and watch over the lowlands but the texture of the surrounding rock, particularly above and to the left, shows clear signs of erosion while the rough rocks in the foreground would likely have been cleared when this dwelling was occupied.
The doorway to the inner chamber is curiously square and makes me wonder if it once had some form of wooden door. Why would you make a doorway square if you weren't trying to plug it with a square plug?
Notice that the inner chamber is filling with sand. To a trained archaeologist this might be quite an interesting site – excavate the sand and look for arrow heads, animal bones, other indicators of the way of life of the people that once lived here.
