Daily Photo – More Flowstone

OK, so actually it's the same flowstone as yesterday, just a different orientation.

The black marks are, of course, bat guano. As I mentioned yesterday when touching a with your finger, the bat guano causes the water to flow slightly differently and differences in the flow are what leads to the all the variety of shapes seen here. There's a really nice curtain just left of center but unfortunately I don't have a close-up shot of that.

The variety of colors is due to different minerals being present in the water at different times which in turn suggests the water has taken different paths though the overlying rock strata over the millennia. Top to bottom this frame covers some eight to ten feet in height as best I can tell.

If I were shooting this today, I'd try to get a person or something else in the shot to provide some scale. I'd also seek to use off- from the side the provide more interesting shadows that better emphasize the wonderful textures of this .
