In the bottom of a wadi like this is not the best place to break down. Actually, I've no recollection of breaking down. I'm guessing we had some problem though because the hood of the Land rover is open.
In the bottom of a wadi like this our VHF radio would likely not have worked well if at all while the antenna for the short wave radio is not mounted. On the plus side, we're definitely on a trail of some sort. Breakdowns on my crews were rare. We employed great mechanics who worked miracles given the conditions, including stripping down engines and rebuilding them not in clean rooms but outside with the sand swirling around. And the rebuild engines ran just fine.
Maybe we overheated, as I said, I don't remember. But obviously I had some time to wander around and climb the side of the wadi to get this photo and yesterday's.
Looking at this now I'm still struck by the relative size of the bush to the right of the Land rover. It's not the only bush but its by far the biggest. And a lush green too.
Clearly there was a reasonable amount of moisture available to its roots.
