Below is a wider shot along pagoda street and below that another view that shows the high rises in the background that allowed me to determine this is pagoda street.
It's interesting looking at Google street View around here. pagoda Street, and the whole Chinatown area, has been spruced up in the intervening years. Pagoda street itself appears to be a pedestrian street now so there is no Google Street View of it but if you take a Street View drive along South Bridge Road and stop at the eastern end of Pagoda Street and look at the building you'll see the same roof lines.
After posting a detail shot a couple of days back I've revisited the actual slides and my slide notes say that these photos were taken on August 11, 1989. Since Singapore's National Day is August 9th, that would explain all the national flags flying from nearly every property along the street.
The tall building on the left at the frame near the end of the street appears to no longer be there. The wall on the right at the end of the street is the wall of the Sri Mariamman Temple.
I've no idea if Friday was laundry day or if every day was laundry day but it was clearly laundry day for many residents.
