Here's a different photo of the Paradise Air Grumman Goose I posted a few days back. From the shadows on the hills in the background it looks like I took this mid-afternoon.
I would have been on the beach or on the terrace at the Encenda beach Resort when I took this, shooting into the sun.
The glassy calm waters show that learning to dive here was more like an ultra-large swimming pool – very little current in this part of the bay.
The Grumman Goose was designed in 1936 and first flew in 1937 as an eight seat commuter aircraft for wealthy Long Islanders to fly to Manhattan. It was also Grumman's first monoplane. Early models were fitted for only two or three passengers and had a bar and toilet – just what the commuting mogul needed to make the commute from the Hamptons to Manhattan almost bearable.
345 of these were built and according to Wikipedia around 30 are still airworthy in 2013.
Black and White version first, color below.
