We would only get the national holiday's while working in south africa so as we approached Christmas we would ‘stack' production – work overtime to cover about a week off at Christmas.
In 1987 we flew to Cape Town and rented a house to stay in. As I recall, we couldn't get a week's rental, only a fortnight, so we paid for two weeks but only stayed for one. Then, when we returned to Delmas, a nearby lightning strike had damaged our recording equipment. We had to call the manufacturer in the US for spares and they duly dispatched a set, but these went missing somewhere near JFK so we had to order more. In all, it took about another to get the recording instruments running again so most of us could have stayed in Cape Town for that second week!
A little way north up the Atlantic Coast from Cape Town is the beach community of Sunset beach. On the day we went up there they were having a windsurfing (sailboarding? – Anyone know the difference? Anyone care?) competition that we stayed and watched for a while.
