Here's one of our desert mechanics and his helper under the water tanker in yesterday's photo.
His task is the make this new red mounting bracket fit like old black one since we didn't have the exact spare. Note the sand on the boards. It didn't matter how much they swept the boards, the wind would blow the sand right back in again.
I remember when this guy was new – it might even have been with this truck. For whatever reason, they needed to drop the bottom of the crank case off the engine to get to something. Having addressed whatever was the issue it was time to rebuild the bottom part of the engine and he spent a bunch of time looking for new big end bearings.
He'd just come from a UK maintenance shop. You wouldn't rebuild the engine with the old bearings, you'd always put new ones in.
Well, of course, we didn't have any new bearing for the engine he was working on so the chief mechanic told him to put the old ones back in. He was devastated. It went against all his training but he had no choice. He had to dig them out of the trash where he'd thrown them, polish them up and re-install them.
Needless to say, the rebuilt engine worked just fine.
